Last year, popular R n‘B Music found it‘s ways into underground UK-garage sounds by replacing the MC‘s by an R n‘B vocalist. Then in 2011, Jamie Woon and SBTRKT took this influences and produced both a masterpiece of electronic pop music. SBTRKT is influenced by dubstep and experimental sounds, on the other hand Jamie Woon is slighty more influenced by electonica.

With no doubt one of the most influential compilations of this year. It belongs to the album section because it mostly consists of the W+L stable’s work and showed their path of the past years. The compilation came with a bonus mix called 5 Years at Marcy Hotel, showing the philosophy behind W+L’s work and as important as WLSC compilation.

SECT feat. Ben Westbeech- In The Park

‘Without You’ was on of the most played tracks of 2010, so the expectations to their  album were huge. But Art Department exceeded them entirely and Drawing Board became an important milestone of Crosstown Rebels rise.

Late in 2011 but at the right time; Portable’s debut album Into Infinity on the legendary Perlon label. The timeless and wonderful track ‘Onward’ showed what House is capable of. He used his voice not just as a sound element, he used it like a song; without falling into the classical song-structure.

Roman Flügel‘s album Fatty Folders is very interesting in the way how he leaves the classic electronic music arrangements by morphing one part into another, layering countless and rarely repeating sound-elements over each other. Sometimes even leaving out most of beat elements and creating the rhythms with only noises and instruments.

Roman Flügel – Fatty Folders (Album Preview)

Blood Orange‘s soulful music, citing the glamour and drama of NYC’s 80′s underground was the surprise of this year. A brightly shining diamond.

Blood Orange – Sutphin Boulevard

The album titled Pyrography by Osunlade is a deep, percussive and organic journey into sound, often accompanied by soulful vocals. The song ,Envision‘ entered the dance-floors all over the world.

Osunlade – Pyrography

Steffi released Yours & Mine, a pretty dark house album. The exceptional thing about the album is the drive in all the songs, that really takes you in and keeps you in a flow from the first beat to the last.

After having huge success with „Limit To Your Love“ and „CMYK“ James Blake created a very personal album, and brought his music from the dance-floors to the living-rooms. The album deals with the gaps between the sounds and when Nicolas Jaar released his album „Space Is Only Noise If You Can See“, which has the same ,dancefloor-to-living-room‘-vibe, around the same time this year, James Blake might be saying: „It‘s the gaps that makes the sound, if you can hear“.

James Blake – Unluck

Finally the long lasting stagnancy of minimal house and techno from some years ago has been largely replaced, by the upcoming melodies which are on a vurge of triumphal march right now and dominating the evolvement of the electronic music scene. People had the courage to sample again and break borders of genres without compromises. You can see this process in all kind of productions especially in edits. Which was also one of the reasons why the disco era was mentioned more and more.

Slow, smooth, deep & more disco but still House is what these two Wolf + Lamb guys manifest in each of their work. Love At First Sight | Daphni

My first encounter with Daphni was on Damian Lazarus‘ ingenius Get Lost 4 mix, which included ‘Ye Ye’ of Daphni. In the meantime figured out it was released on Four Tet’s Text Records (analog only) and that Daphni is a new moniker by Caribou‘s Daniel Snaith. Revealing his name, I was a little bit disappointed at first, because I hoped it could be some new kid on the block. But otherwise, it was somehow expected that he would start a new project some day, because we all know Caribou’s love of electronic music.
His tracks are combining a free-jazz feeling with the straighter aspects of electronic music and are highly interesting. So we really think he will become big in 2012.
Be sure to check out his Edits too and grab his works on 12”.

Young label Cinematic release their 10th record on 12-Dec-2011, delivered by Soy Mustafa with remixes by John Tejada (Traum, Trapez, Kompakt…) and Brendon Gregoriy aka Chymera (Cocoon, Ovum…).
The original mix is a spheric but dancy track with ethereal melodies and incessant rhythms.
John Tejada delivers a lighter, more uplifting interpretation and Chymera, rounding off the package, with a darker version of the song.
The release will be available here.
