Weekly Choices | Detroit Jazzin’

Behind Inverse Cinematics is the Stuttgart native Danilo Plessow (also known as Motor City Drum Ensemble). His works are settled somewhere between Jazz, Soul and club-oriented music like breaks and deep house, which Detroit Jazzin’ is a perfect example of. Laid back and powerful in the same time.

DJ Le Roi | I get Deep Remixes | Get Physical Music 160

Like the Zaber Riders, DJ Le Roi‘s acquaintance took place at the Number One Record Store which was located in Basel. Playing with other DJs such as Nick Curly, Gorge, DJ T, Jimpster, Tiefschwarz, DJ Spen, Liquid People, Jon Cutler, Kiko Navarro, Quentin Harris and Copyright, Cedric Eichenberger stood his ground as a talented DJ and entertainer who knows exactly where the boundaries can be broken and teased to total frenzyness. Le Roi has played out to crowds in Miami, London, Amsterdam, Utrecht, Georgia, Albania, and Bordeaux. On Monday GPM 160 will be available.

Love At First Sight | James Welsh

We recently wrote about Maya Janes Coles latest EP on Hypercolour. This time it’s about their little sister label Losing Suki with an EP of James Welsh called Air Valley.
James Welsh had some quite experience with a hardcore band called ‘The Rise’ and an electro-pop band named ‘Ocelot’ but here he dives into some heavy house music and the outcome is a brilliant EP full of character. It will drop in January, so watch out!

2011 Charts | Top & Upcoming Labels

In 2011 the record labels have grown more familiar and identifiable by celebrating so-called label-nights. In the past labels organized a label-night maybe once a year and only in their hometowns. This year labels represented themselves all over the world and more frequently. Some, for example Visionquest were more perceptible as a DJ-team then as a Label.

2011 was the year for Crosstown Rebels, Hot Creations, Visionquest and Wolf + Lamb. They pretty much created the music scene of today, invaded clubs all over the world and established a new wave of sexy, playful and deep house-music. Some of the most interesting artists this year released on some of these labels. Like Maceo Plex, Jamie Jones and Deniz Kurtel.

Wolf + Lamb vs Soul Clap Live @ The Modern Love Affair Vol.3, Footwork, Toronto – 22-05-2011 – Part 1

Damian Lazarus – Get Lost 4 (Snippet)

Diynamic and Leftroom had a very successful year. Coming more from a minimal direction they opened the field for new influences. Especially the releases by David August „You got to Love Me“, the Solomun & Stimming split EP „Challenge Everyday“ (Diynamic), Matthew Burton & Nick Lawsons „Playdo“ and the compilation „The Extended Family Part 2“ (Leftroom).

Leftroom Records – The Extended Family Part 2.

Suol released some of the most beautiful club-songs this Year, from artists like Trickski, Daniel Borz and Fritz Kalkbrenner.

Running Back is a European pendant to DFA Records, not by having their focus on live performing artists but by bringing back 70‘s disco vibes to the state-of-the-art.
Artists like Todd Terje, Tiger and Woods and Roman Flügel published records on Running Back.

Tiger & Woods – Gin Nation

A very exciting and successful podcast-series in 2011 was launched by the label Noir Music. With Noir & Haze (Solomun Vox mix) they can praise themselves to having probably the biggest club-hit of the second half of 2011 in their catalogue (check our Top Tracks).

Here are a few ones we picked, which are very exciting and highly recommended to keep an eye on.
Bloody Mary‘s so-called label Dame-Music singed a few very promising artists and brings together house pioneers like Quenum and fresh talents like Jozif or Midnight Perverts.
AUS Music and Future Boogie focus on innovative music between bass-music, house and techno. Amongst other great records, they released with Midlands „Through Motion“ (AUS Music) and Julio Bashmores „Father Father“ both timeless and wonderful songs.
Catz and Dogz‘s Pets Recordings placed Poland to the European map of house music and gave local talents the possibility to succeed on the international market. Their last two compilations under the name of „Friends Will Carry You Home“ were not only great but promise a great future for 2012.

Last year, popular R n‘B Music found it‘s ways into underground UK-garage sounds by replacing the MC‘s by an R n‘B vocalist. Then in 2011, Jamie Woon and SBTRKT took this influences and produced both a masterpiece of electronic pop music. SBTRKT is influenced by dubstep and experimental sounds, on the other hand Jamie Woon is slighty more influenced by electonica.

With no doubt one of the most influential compilations of this year. It belongs to the album section because it mostly consists of the W+L stable’s work and showed their path of the past years. The compilation came with a bonus mix called 5 Years at Marcy Hotel, showing the philosophy behind W+L’s work and as important as WLSC compilation.

SECT feat. Ben Westbeech- In The Park

‘Without You’ was on of the most played tracks of 2010, so the expectations to their  album were huge. But Art Department exceeded them entirely and Drawing Board became an important milestone of Crosstown Rebels rise.

Late in 2011 but at the right time; Portable’s debut album Into Infinity on the legendary Perlon label. The timeless and wonderful track ‘Onward’ showed what House is capable of. He used his voice not just as a sound element, he used it like a song; without falling into the classical song-structure.

Portable – Onward

Roman Flügel‘s album Fatty Folders is very interesting in the way how he leaves the classic electronic music arrangements by morphing one part into another, layering countless and rarely repeating sound-elements over each other. Sometimes even leaving out most of beat elements and creating the rhythms with only noises and instruments.

Roman Flügel – Fatty Folders (Album Preview)

Blood Orange‘s soulful music, citing the glamour and drama of NYC’s 80′s underground was the surprise of this year. A brightly shining diamond.

Blood Orange – Sutphin Boulevard

The album titled Pyrography by Osunlade is a deep, percussive and organic journey into sound, often accompanied by soulful vocals. The song ,Envision‘ entered the dance-floors all over the world.

Osunlade – Pyrography

Steffi released Yours & Mine, a pretty dark house album. The exceptional thing about the album is the drive in all the songs, that really takes you in and keeps you in a flow from the first beat to the last.

After having huge success with „Limit To Your Love“ and „CMYK“ James Blake created a very personal album, and brought his music from the dance-floors to the living-rooms. The album deals with the gaps between the sounds and when Nicolas Jaar released his album „Space Is Only Noise If You Can See“, which has the same ,dancefloor-to-living-room‘-vibe, around the same time this year, James Blake might be saying: „It‘s the gaps that makes the sound, if you can hear“.

James Blake – Unluck
